Live Shows

Nobody Likes Onions frequently does live shows. These episodes normally occur on Tuesday nights at approximately 8:30 pm EST. Live shows may occur at other times, such as special events or impromptu live shows. In the latter case, these impromptu shows are usually announced through the forums. For regular live shows or special events, the NLO Live Show page lists upcoming scheduled shows.

Live shows are broadcasted using Ustream, an online video-casting application with chatroom integration. Ustream supports multiple cameras, and presently, the show uses 2-3 cameras: an overhead camera showing the studio, a camera focused on Patrick, and a camera focused on Chef. Generally speaking, the chatroom is for discussion among listeners before/during/after the live broadcast, though at times and often during breaks Chef and Keely have been known to participate. Also, as a rule of thumb, if there is video and no audio, the live show has not started yet, and if there is video and music, then the show either hasn't started yet or is in break.

There are a handful of ways listeners can participate during live shows.

Some Tips For Communicating With The Hosts
  • Calls
    • Bad calls are disruptive.
      • If you choose to call in, be sure to have a relevant point to make.
      • If your call is "I love you guys" in the middle of a segment, you are not helping the show.
      • Before you call in, make sure you have the sound of the live show turned off, otherwise it comes through as background noise in your call.
    • Real phone calls are preferable to Skype calls.
      • If your call has horrible audio quality, you will be hung up on and probably instructed to use a real phone.
    • NLO is not a call-in show. Calls are meant to supplement ongoing segments, not drive the program.
      • If your calls are not being answered, chances are they are in the middle of a segment where they aren't taking calls, or you have called in too many times already.
      • Repeatedly calling is a sure way to annoy Patrick and getting blocked.
  • Feedback
    • They monitor the feedback and read the best comments on the air.
      • If they do not read your feedback, they did not think it was entertaining or relevant enough to mention.
      • Repeatedly submitting the same remark is tantamount to spamming, and spammers get their IP banned from the feedback.

One commonly asked question is "Who is...?" Chances are the only girl you see is Keely. Patrick is the fat guy with short, black hair, and will most likely have the second camera focused on just his face. JB is also fat, but bald, and will usually be wearing a hat and/or a sports jersey. Chef is not as large as Patrick or JB, and normally has a black beard or goatee. JB or Chef tend to be on the third camera, and either have it focused on just them, or they are on it together. Roy Johnson has a mustache, and Jake Lloyd has a bunch of tattoos. Dagre should also be easy to recognize. Be patient, and you should be able to pick up on who everyone is.

No one likes a whiner. If the show hasn't started yet, too bad. It will start when it does, and you won't be able to make it start sooner. At times, Patrick may come on and announce a more definite time of when the show starts, so watch out for that. People in the chat may have mentioned this as well, so before asking a question, try reading some of the chat to see if it has already been asked.

Much like the show hosts don't want to read your same "funny" line over and over again, neither do the people in the chat. If you get no reaction from a line, get over it. It is not that no one saw it, but that it is not as funny as you think. Posting the same sentence five times in thirty seconds will not make it any more entertaining. Also, don't try to be a tough guy and pick fights with someone in the chat.

During breaks, please do not ask what the song is over and over. Someone will ask, it's pretty much a given. Just pay attention the chat log and you'll find out without bothering others by asking questions that were already answered.

Too busy to catch the live shows? Too bad, you’re going to miss all of the fun technical difficulties that occur during the show, the musical breaks and the jerks in the chat. The good news is the live shows are released in the main feed later on in the week. There are a few times where something occurs that causes Patrick to deem the show unfit for the feed. Either it was intended from the start to be a reward for those who participate on the forums, or something went wrong on the show, and Patrick does not want it released.

If you find the feed skipping or lagging, click Menu on the video window and set a buffer.
