Patrick, Johnny B and Chef are all poker enthusiasts; in fact, JB and Chef are both professional poker dealers. On the program, the hosts will frequently go into play-by-play, card-by-card retellings of gaming experiences. Of course, Nobody Likes Onions is not a poker podcast, and these accounts usually involve enough substance to make for good podcasting: memorable personalities, poorly mannered players, brutal losses and close-calls, and the occasional victory. Most of these are short stories from their local casino or online games, but sometimes poker becomes the dominant topic on an episode. In fact, the hosts' frequent excursions to Biloxi (and sometimes Las Vegas) have led to what are known as "recap" episodes which are essentially dedicated to discussing their poker experiences from the trip.

In addition to being a major past-time (and career) for the hosts, poker provides a way for fans and the hosts to interact outside the program. NLO-hosted poker tournaments are hosted from time to time, often immediately before live shows.
